Beginning in December 2020, Astitva initiated its community health work across four Kurumba hamlets in the Nilgiris, reaching approximately 250 community members. Through focused interventions on nutrition, anaemia, and overall health, a large majority of participants showed measurable improvement, including significant gains in the growth outcomes of malnourished children. This foundational work evolved into Project Thrive, with a continued focus on anaemia management, preventive health practices, and community-level engagement.
In the following phase, Astitva expanded its interventions to government tribal residential schools by introducing structured health, hygiene, and nutrition education through interactive and age-appropriate approaches. Initiatives such as Health Clubs supported positive behavioural practices among students, while collaboration with government systems ensured access to iron and Vitamin C supplementation. Over successive years, a substantial proportion of students demonstrated improvements in health and nutrition indicators. This programme, now implemented as Project Enrich, has expanded to additional schools and currently reaches close to 700 students.
In the fourth year, Astitva launched Project Nourish, focusing on addressing malnutrition among children under six years of age and antenatal and postnatal mothers. Now in the twelfth month of this two-year programme, the project has recorded measurable improvements in height and weight among the majority of enrolled participants. Nearly half of the beneficiaries have progressed from severe to moderate or from moderate to normal nutritional categories, while continued monitoring and support are ongoing for others. Alongside direct nutrition interventions, sustained awareness-building efforts have strengthened caregivers’ understanding of diet, supplementation, and feeding practices, supporting longer-term nutrition outcomes at the household level.
